Arizona voters and small business owners are sharing how Donald Trump’s new economic megabill is impacting jobs, wages, and local businesses in key battleground districts ahead of the 2026 elections.

New Steakhouse Launches Amid Uncertain Times — and a Big Tax Break Push

Opening a restaurant is always a gamble. But in this sweltering Arizona summer, with meat prices soaring and the economy unpredictable, the risks feel even higher for Ray Flores, owner of Charro Steak North near Tucson.

“I’m a little nervous,” Flores admits with a wry smile. “Are you a gambler?”

Despite the heat and financial stress, the new steakhouse appears poised for success. The bar is stocked, supplies are delivered, and a full team is on board. Interestingly, Flores credits a recent Republican-backed tax relief bill—championed by President Trump and Congress—for boosting his hiring efforts.

“We had a really robust hiring fair… a lot more applicants, and a higher quality than we've seen in years. I believe those messages of tax relief helped,

The bill includes a temporary exemption from taxes on tipped wages and overtime, a policy that Flores thinks played a major role in attracting quality applicants in Arizona’s competitive 6th Congressional District—a political battleground Republicans are eager to keep under control.

Cautious Support for GOP Incumbent

Flores has supported GOP Rep. Juan Ciscomani in the past, but he's not yet pledged his support.

“Right now, we're in the off-season... that question needs to be asked a year from now,” he said.

He worries that, once elected, lawmakers become more focused on re-election than on their constituents.

“Unfortunately, once you’re elected, that's the treadmill you're on. It feels like they're more focused on staying in office than serving our community,” Flores reflects.

Bringing Policy to Life

Through Flores’s story, we see how national tax policies—like exempting tips and overtime from income tax—can ripple down to local businesses and hiring trends.

  • Tax relief aims… to ease payroll costs for owners and put more money in workers’ pockets.

  • Business response… a boost in hiring activity for Flores in a region where staffing has been tough.

  • Political context… this all unfolds in a swing district where every vote—and every policy—matters.

As the political season gears up, stories like this illustrate the tangible effects of economic policy on small business owners and their communities.
