Anutin Charnvirakul Confirmed as Thailand’s New Prime Minister, Promises Early Elections
Anutin Assumes Leadership of Interim Government
Thailand has a new prime minister. Anutin Charnvirakul, a conservative businessman and leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, was confirmed by parliament on Friday, filling the power vacuum left after the removal of Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Anutin built a coalition with opposition parties to prevent Pheu Thai, the party associated with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, from dominating the government.
Commitment to Fresh Elections
The People’s Party, which holds the largest number of seats in parliament, supported Anutin on the condition that he call new elections within four months.
“I will honor all agreements,” Anutin said outside his party headquarters. “During my brief term, we must restore the spirit of the ‘Land of Smiles’ to our country.”
Known for his preference for avoiding political conflict, Anutin pledged a fair and impartial approach to governance.
Reaction to Thaksin’s Departure
Anutin commented on Thaksin Shinawatra’s unexpected departure from Thailand the night before the vote. Thaksin flew to Dubai for medical treatment and to visit friends while awaiting a Supreme Court ruling related to his hospital stay after returning from exile in August 2023. Analysts say the court’s decision could result in Thaksin facing jail time.
“There will be no favoritism, no persecution, and no revenge,” Anutin said, underscoring his promise of impartial leadership.
Political Context and Coalition Dynamics
Earlier in 2023, Anutin’s Bhumjaithai Party had been in coalition with Pheu Thai but withdrew in June following allegations of misconduct involving Paetongtarn Shinawatra and a leaked phone conversation with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The Shinawatra family has been a dominant force in Thai politics for more than 20 years, frequently clashing with the pro-monarchy and pro-military establishment, which sees them as a challenge to traditional authority. Paetongtarn’s recent removal marks another setback for the family.
Anutin’s Track Record and Policies
Anutin has previously served as Deputy Prime Minister, Interior Minister, and Health Minister. He gained national attention for successfully legalizing cannabis in Thailand in 2022, fulfilling a high-profile campaign promise.
Although parliament has confirmed him, Anutin’s appointment as prime minister still requires royal approval from the king to take full effect.
