Apple Watch to Launch FDA-Cleared Hypertension Detection Feature

Apple is preparing to roll out a new hypertension detection feature on its Apple Watch next week after receiving official clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Bloomberg News reported.

Apple Watch to Launch FDA-Cleared Hypertension Detection Feature Next Week

Apple is set to roll out a groundbreaking hypertension detection feature on its Apple Watch next week after receiving clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to a report by Bloomberg News.

The new tool, introduced during Apple’s September 9 event alongside the latest iPhone lineup — including the slimmer iPhone Air — will enhance the smartwatch’s role in health monitoring. Apple also unveiled its updated blood pressure monitoring system as part of the announcement.

While the feature is not designed to diagnose every case of high blood pressure, Apple says it has the potential to alert more than one million people globally. By using the watch’s advanced optical heart sensor, the technology tracks how blood vessels respond to heartbeats over 30 days, providing users with valuable insights into potential hypertension risks.

The feature will launch in 150 countries and will be compatible with the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, as well as the premium Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 models, Bloomberg reported.

Apple and the FDA have not yet responded to media requests for comment, but the move highlights Apple’s continued expansion into digital health and wellness technology.

A Breakthrough in Health Technology

The feature was first revealed during Apple’s September 9 event, where the company also introduced a refreshed iPhone lineup, including the new, slimmer iPhone Air. Alongside the iPhone release, Apple unveiled its blood pressure monitoring system, designed to enhance the Apple Watch’s role as a leading health companion.

How the Hypertension Feature Works

According to Apple, the feature won’t detect every single case of high blood pressure but could alert over one million people worldwide to potential risks. The system relies on the watch’s optical heart sensor, which monitors how blood vessels respond to heartbeats over a 30-day tracking period.

This data can help users identify early signs of hypertension, giving them the chance to seek timely medical advice.

Global Availability and Supported Models

The hypertension detection feature will be available in 150 countries and will work on:

  • Apple Watch Series 9

  • Apple Watch Series 10

  • Apple Watch Series 11

  • Apple Watch Ultra 2

  • Apple Watch Ultra 3

Expanding Apple’s Health & Wellness Ecosystem

Apple has not commented publicly on the FDA clearance, nor has the FDA itself responded to media requests. Still, this marks another significant step in Apple’s growing push into digital health technology, making the Apple Watch more than just a fitness tracker — but a true personal health monitor.
